“Towards a Just and Humane Society: The Birth of CIE (2015)”

Creating a just and humane society - these are the goals laid out by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (Benilde) when it revised its Vision-Mission in 2013. Under the guidance of its new Brother President, Br. Dennis Magbanua FSC, Benilde formalized its identity of being an inclusive and innovative institution.

As a testament to its new Vision-Mission, the College created a committee that will focus on the inclusion efforts of Benilde. Headed by Ms. Maria Victoria Dayao, the group paved the way to what Benildeans now call as Benildean Inclusion.

Through their efforts, several programs were adopted by the College to be more inclusive. The Admissions Center started providing reasonable accommodations to applicants who are in need, the Learning Resource Center procured a Braille embosser which was used to support blind students, and the College as a whole started to collect data on students with specific learning needs (SLN) to have an idea on the support that they would need.

All these efforts culminated in the creation of one unit which will focus on the inclusion efforts of Benilde - the Center for Inclusive Education (CIE).

Under the direction of Dr. Catherine Deen, CIE was formally established in October 2015 as the Center that will ensure that students, especially those with SLN, will have the chance to maximize their stay in the College.

The birth of CIE clearly signifies the true intentions of Benilde - that they are willing to do everything they can to build a just and humane society.
